(2026 Guide)

Hi, this is Amir from Almaty Nomads

March is actually one of my favorite times of the year here in Almaty because you get to experience two seasons at once.

In the city, winter slowly starts to fade away. The days become sunnier, the weather feels more comfortable, and you can enjoy walking around parks, cafes, and local markets without the extreme cold of January or February.

But if you drive just 30 to 40 minutes into the mountains, it still looks like full winter. Shymbulak Ski Resort is still covered in snow, the mountain views are incredible, and it is one of the last chances to enjoy that true snowy atmosphere before spring fully arrives.
I usually recommend visiting Almaty in March to travelers who enjoy nature and want a more relaxed experience. It is a great time if you like mountain scenery, photography, and fewer crowds.
You can still ski, see beautiful snowy landscapes, take day trips to places like Charyn Canyon, and explore the city comfortably without the busy summer tourist rush.

If you are planning a trip to Almaty in March and want help organizing your itinerary or booking tours, you can message me on WhatsApp anytime. I am always happy to help you plan your trip based on your travel dates and interests.

What is Almaty like in March?

March in Almaty is a transition between winter and spring. In the city, the snow starts melting, the days get sunnier, and the weather feels much more comfortable than in peak winter. You will still have some cold mornings and occasional snow, but overall it is a nice time for walking around and exploring.

There is a big difference between the city and the mountains. While Almaty itself begins to feel like early spring, the mountains still look like full winter. Places like Shymbulak and Medeu remain covered in snow, which makes March one of the last good months for winter activities and snowy views.

Another nice thing about visiting in March is the atmosphere. It is much quieter than peak seasons, with fewer tourists, shorter lines, and a more relaxed local vibe.

If you want to see which experiences and day trips are available during your travel dates, you can check the tours page on our website to explore options and get more details.
What to pack for Almaty in March?
It is necessary to choose a visual aid that is appropriate for the topic and audience.
Packing for Almaty in March is all about layers because the weather can change throughout the day and varies a lot between the city and the mountains. During the daytime in the city, it may feel mild and sunny, but mornings, evenings, and mountain areas can still be quite cold.
It is best to bring a warm jacket, a few sweaters or hoodies, and comfortable long-sleeve clothes that you can layer easily. This way you can adjust depending on whether you are exploring the city or heading into higher elevations.
Shoes are also very important. Since snow may still be melting, streets and trails can be wet or slushy. Waterproof or water-resistant shoes with good grip will make walking much more comfortable.
If you plan to visit mountain areas like Shymbulak, Medeu, or Big Almaty Lake, you should also bring a hat and gloves. It can still feel like full winter there, especially in the mornings and evenings.
Many travelers do not expect how strong the sun can be in the mountains. Sunglasses and sunscreen are highly recommended because sunlight reflecting off the snow can be surprisingly intense.

Not sure what to pack based on your specific travel plans? You can always message us your travel dates, and we will help you prepare for your itinerary.
